HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

This coming Sunday we will be celebrating the feast of The Most Holy Trinity - reminding us that in God there are three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Saint Patrick used a shamrock to illustrate the mystery of the Trinity: it has three leaves but is it just one plant - just as within one God, there are three divine persons who love and guide us.

I am happy to inform you that Father Lorenzo has confirmed our celebration of First Holy Communion Mass to mark the commitment made by children who have celebrated their First Holy Communion this year. Families are invited to join us on Monday 1st July at 2:00pm in the top hall. If your child has made their Communion this year, please let the school office know as we would like to include them in this special occasion.

On Tuesday 19th June all children in year 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be taking part in their sports day. We will be leaving the school at 9:30am to make our way on foot to Regent’s Park Athletics Track. Parents are welcome to join us on the walk or meet us at the running track. The day will consist of organised track and field events and of course we will be having a tug of war and parent races! Please make sure children are dressed in full PE kit, wearing trainers, have applied sunscreen, have a sun hat, plenty of water to drink and a packed lunch. We will keep an eye on the weather so in case it is rainy, please dress for the weather. I look forward to seeing you there!

Nursery and Reception will have their sports day on Friday 21st June and KS1 children on Tuesday 25th June at the school. Events start at 9:30am. Families are warmly invited to come along to cheer the children on and join in!

A reminder to parents who have children joining our Reception and Nursery classes in September that the induction meeting will be taking place on Wednesday 26th June at 2:00pm. You will be given further starting information as well as a date for a 1:1 meeting with your child’s future class teacher. Representatives from our uniform supplier, Ace Clothing, will also be available to enable you to view uniform/sizes and order if you so wish.

While the weather is still changeable and wet, children must please come to school wearing coats.

Please note our term dates for the next academic year have been amended to reflect the change in the date of the early May Bank Holiday from Monday 4th to Friday 8th May to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss Clare O’Connor

RE CORNER

In Class 1, our current topic is 'Friends'. In this topic, we will discuss what it means to be a friend, how we make friends and how we become a friend of God. This week, we have focused on how important it is to have friends and be a better friend. Class 1 came up with these ideas:

This topic is important to us as we look forward to building on our current friendships and making lots more friends as we continue in St Edwards.

SPORT

Westminster Tri Golf Tournament

On Monday, St Edward's went to play in the Tri Golf tournament. Most of us have tried mini golf but we haven't really play real golf before. We took part in fun activities such as Drive for Show, Chipping and Aiming. It was really great to learn a new sport and to take part in a competition. We came in 2nd place! It was surprisingly enjoyable and I think other people should try it too! By Gracie, class 12

HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

We will celebrate Pentecost Sunday this week. We are encouraged to grow in courage, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness and faithfulness by being open to and receiving the many priceless gifts which the Holy Spirit brings. By helping others at home, at school or in our wider community we will keep the Holy Spirit alive today and always.

A warm welcome back as we face the final stretch of this academic year. The next few weeks are jam packed with events as we celebrate our achievements and hard work and prepare to say farewell to those leaving us at the end of the year. Please make a note of important dates that can be found below. There has been a change to the date of Summer Party which will now take place on Thursday the 11th July. Thank you to parents who have already volunteered to help out, but a few extra hands on deck is always appreciated. So, if you are willing to help, please come along to our Coffee Morning next Wednesday (12th June) to help Mrs Moon get the organisation started.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended yesterday to meet with our future additions to the Senior Leadership team Mr Tissot, Ms Thomas and Mr Smith - I am confident that St. Edward’s will benefit enormously from their leadership and expertise and I know that they are very much looking forward to working with staff and families.

Have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss Clare O’Connor

RE CORNER

This week in class 2 we began our new RE topic ‘Friends’.  We have been thinking about what it means to be a good friend.  We know that friends look after each other.  Friends make us happy, comfortable and glad.

We have also been thinking about the things that spoil friendships and how we can make friends again. When that happens, we need to say sorry and make up as friends as soon as we can.

Jesus had lots of friends. His closest friends were called his disciples. Jesus was a special friend to all the children. Jesus gave us all an important rule – that we should love each other.  Loving each other is a sign that we are friends of Jesus.

HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

Sunday’s Gospel will remind us that Jesus will always be there for us - he gives us the gift of peace. We can share God’s peace by being kind to one another, promoting respect and living in friendship with others.

Sadly Mrs Moon, our Deputy Headteacher, will be leaving us at the end of the academic year to start a new role as Deputy Headteacher closer to her home. She is a much loved and valued member of our school community where the children are always at the heart of all she does. I am sure you will join me in thanking Mrs Moon for her dedicated work and positive contribution to St. Edward’s over the last 13 years and wish her all the very best for the future.

I am pleased to inform you that as of September our Executive Headteacher will be Mr Martin Tissot, Ms Anne Thomas will be our Headteacher and Mr Jason Smith will be our Deputy Headteacher. Mrs Sonia Gomes, our Assistant Headteacher, and Mr Darren Clough, our Inclusion Manger, will continue in their roles as part of St. Edward’s Senior Leadership team. Please ensure that you read the letter which has been sent home today for more information.

Thank you to everyone who supported our cake sale we raised £128 in support of MIND. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will go towards helping a very worthy cause - supporting people who struggle with their mental health and families and friends who are affected. Thank you Miss Gaebler and Miss Wilson-Fyall for organising the event.

Earlier this week a text message was sent out regarding the increase in number of cases of measles that have been reported recently. Please see below for information that has been provided to schools by Public Health England.

Have a lovely half term break and I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday the 4th June.

Best wishes,

Miss Clare O’Connor

NOTICES AND REMINDERS

Class 2’s Assembly

This half term our theme is 'strength of mind'. In our assembly we shared what having a positive mindset means. Positive mindset is about how you think and feel, rather than what you can or cannot do.  In class 2 we are always trying new things. We know that we can be as brilliant as anybody else. You can be a genius, if you believe you can!  We are, motivated, dedicated, enthusiastic, keen, hard-working and positive.  We keep trying, take pride in our work, tackle new challenges and ask for help if we need to .  We believe in ourselves.  We know that mistakes are OK and have changed our mindset to I can do it.

Mad Science Assembly

On Monday, Paul from Mad Science visited us. He presented an interesting assembly loaded with scientific facts and exciting experiments! If your child is interested in joining the Mad Science after school club next half term , please register here.

OUR RE CORNER

This term in class 3 we have been studying the topic 'Holidays and Holy Days'. The children have been reflecting on the different Holy days we have looked at so far, like Christmas and the Easter story. We were very good at recalling key events about these holidays. Then, we started to learn more about the Pentecost and the promise that Jesus made to his disciples about when he goes to heaven to be with his father that God will send the Holy Spirit down in his place to help guide them. As a class we have written a prayer about this during one of our collective worships.

hs.jpg

Dear God, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to be with us. It helps us to remember what Jesus has done for us and to understand the lessons taught in the Bible. Amen.

SPORT

Kwik Cricket

St. Edward’s girls’ and boys’ cricket teams had a brilliant time participating in the ECB Kwik Cricket Tournament 2019. They displayed great determination and sportsmanship and should be very proud of their performance. Our boys’ team fared particularly well coming second out of 26 competing schools! They proudly showed off their certificates and medals at this morning’s assembly.

HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

A Big Green “Thank You” to  The Leader of Westminster City Council, Nickie Aiken and Westminster City Council

.... for all the help given to our school, to counteract the effects of pollution.   From the double yellow lines outside the school gates to the green screen around our playground, you have helped us to reduce the harmful effects generated by road users in our area.

Westminster Council provided the funding of £26,900  to  enable us to install the green screen around the school. Not only will this help to counteract harmful emissions, it  also provides our children with much needed privacy as they play and enhances  the overall appearance of the school.

Long before it became such a hot topic in the news, our children were learning about pollution and measuring harmful emissions, when they became involved in 2016 in a local project spearheaded by Mrs Sheila D’Souza, ex-Westminster Councillor, and our previous Vice Chair of Governors.

They presented their findings, and a petition to Councillor Aiken and officials from Transport for London (TfL), and lobbied for measures to improve the environment in our school. Our campaign to get bus drivers to “switch off “ rather than leave their engines idling whilst on the bus stand in Hayes Place was enthusiastically embraced by pupils, parents and staff and supported by Westminster Council and TfL. It was highlighted in a promotional video for, featuring some of our children and well known actor Nigel Havers.

When we returned to school after the Easter Break, we were very pleased to see that, thanks again to Councillor Aiken’s intervention, the bus stand in Hayes Place was moved well back from our school playground. It is now next to a solid brick wall which should  help to reduce the amount of pollution getting into  our playground.   A proposal to relocate the bus stand completely away from the school and re-route the buses has been produced and is being discussed with TfL.  We do hope TfL will do their bit to help improve the environment for our children.

St. Edward’s will continue to do all it  can to improve the environment for our children  and ask all our families and friends to do the same.

 Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we will listen to the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. Jesus gave us all a new commandment - to love one another as He has loved us. Whenever we love and care for one another, we can be sure that God is with us.

A big well done to our year 6 children on completeing their SATs this week! They should all be very proud of themselves for trying their best!

Parents are warmly invited to attend an online safety workshop on Tuesday 21st May at 2:45pm. The workshop will be lead by Belinda Evans who some of you may remember from previous parent information sessions. The workshop promises to be very informative and Belinda will be more than happy to offer advice on any specific concerns that you may have regarding your family’s online safety.

On Thursday 23rd May, there will be a bake sale after school in the playground organised by staff. We are hoping to raise money for MIND charity. This is a charity that supports people who struggle with their mental health and supports families and friends involved. We would like children to bring in a donation of baked goods for this event. We hope to raise lots for this very important charity!

A reminder that the school photographers will be in on Monday to take class and group photos. Please ensure your child is wearing full and correct summer school uniform.

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Miss Clare O’Connor

Class 10’s Poetry - Friendship

Never a day goes by when I am not thinking of you,

Because I value your friendship

And you’ve proven that it is true.

If I’m having a bad day, I know it will come to an end.

When I see your beautiful smile,

I feel the positive vibes that you send.

The world is a much better place because

Of people just like you,

Who seek to help those in need

And expect nothing for what they do.

I am fortunate to be your friend

And I‘m only a phone call away.

I will always be there for you.

Our friendship is here to stay.

By Emilia, class 10

You are my friend till the end.

You might just be a person,

But to me you are the world.

You stand by my side,

But when I need help you will arrive.

Since day one it has been the best one.

You make me laugh and cry,

But I always need you by my side!

This is for you Class 10.

You are my best friend!

Class Photos

A reminder that the school photographers will be visiting us on Monday to take class and group photos. Please make sure that children are dressed in the full and correct SUMMER uniform.

OUR RE CORNER

This term in class 8 we have been studying the topic 'Energy'. We have been learning about Pentecost and the importance of the symbols 'fire' and 'wind'. Children have been able to retell the story of Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit with it's gifts helps to guide them and help them to make the right choices. Children have created some beautiful pieces of artwork to reflect their vision of the Holy Spirit.

SPORT

Congratulations to our St. Edward’s children who took part in the London table tennis qualifiers last weekend. We wish her great luck and every success!

HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

This Sunday the Gospel will remind us that Jesus is the Good Shepherd and that we can rely on him to guide our lives in the right direction. If we listen to Jesus and follow him, we can live in God’s love to make life better for all around us.

It has been a busy week at St. Edward’s with exciting trips and learning experiences happening. I do hope you enjoy the pictures below.

On Thursday the 16th May, your child is invited to join us for a delicious ‘build a burger’ lunch. For this event, the meal is FREE for all children, however it is necessary to return the reply slip which can be found on the letters that have been sent home today.

We are hoping to host our annual children’s Summer Party on the afternoon of 28th June. The event will only be able to go ahead with the help of parent volunteers. If you are able to assist in the organising of the party and helping out on the day, then please let the school office know. Thank you to the parents who have already volunteered - your continued help and support is very much appreciated!

To all in Year Six, wishing you the very best of luck for your SATS. You have all worked so hard and should be extremely proud of your achievements so far.  All of you have shown a great commitment to your learning and next week is your chance to shine! Relax over the weekend. Good luck!

Have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss O’Connor

NOTICES AND REMINDERS

Class 1’s Assembly

On Thursday, class 1 had their first ever class assembly! The children in class 1 decided that they wanted to do their assembly about their friends. We talked about what it means to be a good friend and how we can continue doing so. Considering the children in class 1 are 3 and 4 years old, they did so well to get up on the stage and perform! They have grown in confidence so much and we are SO proud!
Miss Wilson-Fyall and Mrs Lee

Class 12 meet the England cricket team!

On Thursday, class 12 had the privilege of meeting a few players of the England cricket team. They helped the class with their cricketing skills and they even played a match with the children! Everyone felt so fortunate to have met them and we wish them luck in the upcoming cricket world cup.

St. Edward’s visits QPR!

Ten lucky children were chosen to participate in a rugby and football festival hosted by QPR. The children were taken on a tour of the stadium and also competed in matches on the actual Loftus Road pitch - home of QPR Football Club!

Year 4 get scientific!

On Thursday, in year 4 we received a special visitor who came from Benjamin Franklin House. Did you know that Benjamin Franklin not only invented electricity, but also made the first bi- focal glasses? We had lots of fun and at the end created a plan for our own inventions! Marley invented a robot which would collect all the litter from the streets - it's name was "Save the world 6000!"

Art Club

Our Art club children had fun trying their hand at tape resist art this week and the results were great!

Good luck to all children sitting their SATs next week! We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Children are invited to have a delicious ‘build a burger’ lunch on Thusday 16th May. The event will be free for all children. So, if you normally bring a packed lunch to school, why don’t you have a yummy burger instead? Vegetarian options will be available. All you need to do is return the reply slip by Tuesday 14th May.

OUR RE CORNER

pen.jpg

In class 10 we have been learning about ‘New Life’ based on the Pentecost. In Pentecost the Holy Spirit came down to the disciples which helped them to share the Good News. Pentecost was after the Ascension, when Jesus came down from heaven and resurrected from the dead in accordance with the scriptures.

The Holy Spirit’s love, protection, guidance and care was shared by the disciples to people across the world. New life reminds us that God is all around us - protecting, guiding, caring and forgiving us always. We always are given chances to start a fresh. By Melanta and Izzy
